BUZZ to rock downtown as scavenger teams race for charity

» Eileen O. Daday

Look for a buzz of activity going on Saturday afternoon in downtown Arlington Heights.

That's where 30 teams of participants are expected to converge on local hot spots to solve clues during the "Amazing Race" benefit, including at stores, restaurants, businesses, parks and residences, all within downtown Arlington Heights.

"It's a cross between the television show, 'The Amazing Race,' and a scavenger hunt," says Susan Dawson of Arlington Heights, a member of the philanthropic organization of dedicated professionals, known as BUZZ.

Each team will be made up of two people who will have to solve clues to get them to the next location. Once there, they will have to complete tasks to get the clue that will advance them in the race.

Along the way they can answer trivia questions and find items located around Arlington Heights, for time deductions. All teams will start at 3 p.m. at Peggy Kinnane's Irish Restaurant and Pub, 8 N. Vail Ave., and wrap up about 5 p.m.

"We're inviting people to come to downtown Arlington Heights and watch, like have a picnic in Harmony Park," Dawson adds. "That way, they'll be part of the action as racers will be depending on people on the street to help them solve the riddles and complete the tasks."

This is the first event sponsored by BUZZ and they are excited with the response, Dawson says. All proceeds will benefit the new Safe House opened in January in Rolling Meadows by WINGS or Women In Need Growing Stronger, to offer emergency shelter to domestic abuse victims and their children.

A few slots remain open for interested teams to participate. Participants may sign up at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at Peggy Kinnane's, or visit the Web site at www.projectbuzz.org. Tickets are $80 per team, which includes the post-race party, or $30 for the finish line party only.
